This textile gets its name from the time of its origin when Western Orissa was lovingly called Sambalpur. Although it is popularly known as Sambalpuri Ikat in the designer community, it is still referred to as “Bandha” by the rural artisan communities, which translates to - tie.
Unlike other Ikat crafts which display an array of wave-like motifs, Sambalpuri Ikat features defined motifs, which are obtained by precision and patience by the skilled artisans. Most of the designs are cotton-based, making the colour seep in deeper and make any attire crafted with it suitable for all weathers. A huge range of motifs is actualized by the weavers like deer, elephant, duck, and lion, as well as floral designs, the Konark wheel, and the Kumbha or temple motifs, which are especially popular.
The easiest way to know if you are buying authentic Ikat is to check the reverse side of the fabric. If the reverse is exactly the same, you have the right fabric in your hand. On the other hand if the reverse is solid colored, drop it right there - it is not the real stuff. It is faux Ikat. Since Ikat is a resist dyed technique where the yarns are tied and then dyed to get the patterns on the fabric, it can never be one-sided. Ikat is always both-sided.
The term “shibori” comes from the Japanese “shiboru,” meaning twisted and pressed. This technique is a way of making patterns on fabric by exposing only some portions of the fabric to dye.
The brand name NEELI TITLEE translates to “a blue butterfly”. A butterfly is an epitome of free-spiritedness, light, happiness and spontaneity. The color blue symbolizes the calm, limitless, ethereal sea and the sky. These attributes explain most of our design approach. Our designs have the dew-drop freshness of a butterfly and the sophistication of the sea and the sky.
We have a wide range of free-size products along with shibori and naturally dyed scarves. We plan to add many more products to our portfolio in the future. Keep a watch for more Ikat solutions from us. Till then drape, tie, knot and twirl in our beautiful products.
Manisha Chawda, the founder, got enticed by the intricacy of the craft and the beautiful Ikat motifs. She was hooked on the craft and was keen on pursuing it further. In 2012, armed with a strong vision to conceive a label of her own, Neeli Titlee came into existence. Neeli Titlee was created to bridge the gap between the traditional craft of the ikat weavers of western Odisha (Sambalpur) and the growing demand for modern and well-designed sambalpuri Ikat products in the contemporary market.
We work with the bhulia weavers western Odisha who are known for weaving beautiful sambalpuri saris. The smooth curves of the sambalpuri motifs speak of the unparalleled skill of the weavers of this region. The whole of western Odisha was undivided and called Sambalpur in earlier times and ikat being a very well-known textile of the region got its name from the region itself. The weavers, however, call it bandho meaning ‘to tie’.
